Train
Missy Higgins
March 21, 2006 - McCaw Hall - Seattle, WA

group picture (sorta)

Got to the venue...barely. I was in for a surprise though as there was an opening act after all. No one to complain about as it was the delightful Missy Higgins. Saw her opening up for Anna Nalick & Howie Day once. I'm not too familiar with her work since I don't own any of her cds (and by the time I wanted to get one at the merch table they were gone). Anyways, she played several new songs occasionally with her band mate Josh. She really shined vocally and when she was at the keyboards although she has shown skills on the acoustic guitar as well.

During the break I found myself meeting a fellow Train enthusiast (yay). McCaw Hall is a fairly new building...and it didn't seem quite so big, but there were a lot of people there! Mostly hounding on the wine, but I'll go back to that later.

When Train was interviewed awhile ago for KMTT radio they said that this show would be unlike any of the others they did in Seattle. They were going to have lights, projectors, confetti, and all that jazz. It was true. The beginning of the show was just stunning as the figures off their new cd were projected onto the screen. Then focusing on the silhouette of Pat at the microphone at center stage. Powerful imagery.

Here's the set list...to the best of what I could. Trying to keep a list and enjoying myself is a little tasky.

- Skyscraper - new song off their latest cd
- ??? - song from the new cd, I know that much
- Meet Virginia - 2 women managed to get onstage
- Get To Me - to love itself
- It's About You
- Ramble On - I can't believe some people walked out on this one!
- Mississippi - Pat Monahan had 3 dancers on stage, one of them Pat said something to the effect of "oh my goodness" really...I wondered if I should be looking.
- Lovely Piano Interlude - from Mr. Brandon Bush
- Give Myself To You - Pat displays his guitar playing skills for the first time during the tour for the new cd
- She's On Fire - one of my favorites.
- Free - another favorite with the drum interlude in the middle Scott Underwood was amazing! Pat also jumped in on the bongos so they kind of had this drum off thing going on.
- Ordinary - the guys came back out on this one near the edge of the stage with the curtain behind them. Scott, Jimmy Stafford, and Pat performed in a row. They gave the song an acoustic vibe that I enjoyed.
- ??? - Johnny Colt came out with the mandolin...that sounded fantastic enough I couldn't remember what they performed.
- I Am - All of the guys came out on this one. The image of all the guys just simply standing in a row playing this...wow. This was they way that they always wanted to perform it. Complete with accordion.
- Get Out - another new one
- Calling All Angels
- All American Girl - they brought up this young girl to the stange and she skipped around happily
- For Me, It's You
- Drops Of Jupiter

Encore:
- Cab
- Dream On - cover

At the end of the show there I was pretty tired. Perhaps it was due to my partially standing in the aisle. See...the aisles to the McCaw hall are not flat to the floor with the seats. So it's pretty easy to trip over. Resting on two uneven surfaces shot pains through my leg so occasionally I had to sit down, something I didn't really want to do. Was expecting a slow song to come on to rest...but they kept the energy moving. The only other distraction of the night was this woman who obviously had too much to drink and admittedly said that she was going to be noisy. I can take that enthusiasm to an extent, but whistling, yelping, and calling out at least every 3 minutes can give you a headache. Man...she was loud! I mean I think she would still be doing that if the guys were singing slow songs about death. She just seemed so immune to everything around her.

There was a moment in the night where Pat was climbing on the set (as he usually likes to do at these bigger shows). He jumps off the little speaker platform and smack onto the stage. I was a bit concerned at the moment, but he just got back up and kept singing. What a pro...and what a voice.

Good show from a band that was meant to be heard live. Not as cool as the triple dosage of Train I had before, but a fantastic show nonetheless.
