It's been a long time waiting for Sheryl to return to an appropriate
venue that wasn't too far away or expensive. Not to mention wanting to
see her back when she released her second cd. To put things into
perspective. I was so into her music as much as the Wallflowers. And you
know what became of me being a Flowerhead. Tonight at the Paramount it
was a wonderful.
I went to pick up my ticket at will call. I got those All Access VIP
tickets. Not the super fancy one...just the 4 star treatment. I didn't
know where I was going to be sitting at that point, but those who
purchased these kinds of tickets were guaranteed a pretty good spot. I
also got this keychain holder thing as a free gift. Also in knowing that
these vip seats all the proceeds benefit UNICEF
it made everything even nicer.
Inside I picked up some merch. A Sheryl sweater and tee. I was pretty
cold, otherwise I would've just picked up the tee. Inside I felt like I
was the youngest one there. Everyone else seemed middle aged, and if
there was anyone younger than me it was their children. I went to my
seat and was in the 3rd row (not counting the pit area). The place was
pretty empty (the show sold out), but I didn't want to be late since
they said Sheryl was pretty good about punctuality. There also wasn't an
opening act. To my relief.
When the sheer curtain rose the orchestra and most of the band were
already in place. Sheryl stepped out in this beautiful white dress.
Probably even suitable for a wedding on a beach or something. A little
purse looking pouch held her batteries, or whatever you needed for those
ear things.
Excitement just exploded throughout the crowd as she went into "Run
Baby Run." I was on the brink of tears. I don't know why I
became such a sap. Then came "Hard To Make A Stand" one
of my favorites off of her self titled followed by "Maybe Angels"
from the same cd. She introduced it saying it was about UFOs and other
unearthly things. "Good Is Good" followed. Oh the
waterworks came for this one. Lyrically I think it got me. Sheryl's
intro to this one was she loved Lance, but she really loved her
Blackberry and that their first month of dating was really over the
little device. At this point I finally noticed the mother of a rock on
her finger. How could she play a guitar with THAT on?
"Letter To God" and "Perfect Lie" were
also some nice new additions to the set. Afterwards it was probably I'll
have to say one of my most favorite Sheryl songs "My Favorite
Mistake." Clear view of everything on the stage too at that
point. During this song the orchestra took a break so they were all just
watching her. Beck's dad (Donald Campbell) was the conductor for the
orchestra (kinda reminded me of his son in a quirky kinda way) and he
also clapped along to the song as was most of the audience.
More new songs and old new songs (as she put it) continued. "I
Know Why" and the rocking "Live It Up." Sheryl
stopped to say that this seemed kind of like an episode of Storytellers
but went on saying how she used to dedicate this song to all the men who
ever rode with her in the elevators and of course now to all men who
rode bikes..."Strong Enough." "Wildflower"
a nice ballady song and then "If It Makes You Happy."
This was when everyone stood up in front of me so I joined in.
Another old one "It Don't Hurt" also got played. I
don't know why. It didn't really seem to make as strong an impact as
other songs she could've played but I still know all the words. "Always
On Your Side" and "Where Has All The Love Gone"
were done on the piano.
Then the Cat Stevens' tune "The First Cut Is The Deepest"
and the one Sheryl song I absolutely wanted to hear before she really
gets sick of playing it "All I Wanna Do." Then another
favorite of mine "A Change" (it was funny since she
couldn't remember the first line of the song).
There were 2 encores. It included "Soak Up The Sun" and
"Everyday Is A Winding Road."
The second encore consisting of "Safe & Sound" and
a cover of "Levon."
I couldn't have asked for a better evening. What a way to kick off a
tour!
