So after picking up my brother we went to the Chop Suey.
According to the plan
when we got there the doors would be opening as well. Of course, as it
always
seems to be the doors opened up late.
Once inside I was a bit disoriented at first. It looked really nice in
there with this dark Asian theme. There were large mirrors over the place
and the reflections threw me off. With our wrists stamped with the Chinese
character "love" we went inside. The venue is split into 2
areas. Since this was an all ages show (bar with ID) they had this
partition up. No one with a drink could pass that line. This included the
stage area which remained pretty empty up until David Poe's set.
I had my brother save a stool for me on the stage side while I went to the
ladies room. It actually took me awhile since I was trying to pry off this
Duncan Sheik poster they had plastered on the wall and I tore that one up
pretty badly. While I was washing my hands though I spotted another one
out in the hallway held up by push pins. So quietly I started to take it
down when the back stage door opened and this guy in a suit was looking at
me. I thought he might have been a manager of some sorts so I just kind of
smiled sheepishly and continued to remove the poster. What I didn't know
was that he was the main singer of the opening act Reed. I also ran past
his cello player...also in a suit.
I took my place back at the stools on the side of the wall while my
brother went
off to get his drinks on the other side of the fence.
Reed finally came on and it was hard to hear him vocally. Especially if
you were
in the bar I guess. My brother was sitting next to a guy who knew him who
ratted
on him to speak louder because all the could hear was his guitar and the
cello.
I loved the cello, I could only see the guy's bow though. Reed also
mentioned
that there was more to the band...a violin. I'd have to see how they sound
in a
studio cd. It was pretty eclectic.
David Poe came out then and he urged people to drop their drinks from the
bar
area and come to the stage. He thought it was a bummer though that he
couldn't
drink any alcohol because of the "line." He also told them to
quiet down back there. He was pretty funny about it..."unless you
voted for Bush you guys should come over here." They were pretty
disrespectful. Anyways, David played a very good set. It was pretty much
solo with the exception of a drummer and Duncan
Sheik on a few songs. Filled out by the robot. I don't have any of his cds
yet,
except the new one. But after seeing that performance it was just
confirmation I
needed to buy everything he's put out. Too bad the
"Pornographer" song wasn't on any of the ones I'm seeing online.
It had a wicked intro. One of the most
beautiful tunes he did that night was "The Late Song." Oh I have
to have it.
By the time Duncan's set started it was already 11pm. I
thought all ages shows
had a curfew. Well, I can't really give a definite set list from that
night since there wasn't one and they played a few songs off the new cd I
was unfamiliar with so I didn't bother keeping track. There were 9 guitars
on that stage. 9! Duncan did bring his band with him with Gerry Leonard on
guitars (and spooky sounds), a bass, and a drum/computer player. He also
brought out a small recorder to tape the show. It was set in the area in
front of me...so yeah...definately no singing along.

Gerry Leonard
I was relieved that no one shouted out requests,
particularly "Barely Breathing." Sure I love that song, but I've
heard Duncan more than enough times do it live.
Some of the songs I'm sure he did (not in any real order):
- Genius > He dedicated to the crowd of geniuses
- Start Again
- For You > Said that this was a love song and to hook up with
the person
standing next to you. He looked over at Gerry Leonard and started to put
his arm
around him. He had this funny horrified look on his face. "Whoa
man!"
- Good Morning > Set opener
- Hey Casanova > New Song
- Memento > Again! Yay!
- Fantastic Toys and Corduroys > New Song
- While Limosine > New Song
- I Don't Believe In Ghosts > New Song
- Wishful Thinking > Forgot all about this one, but I fell in
love with it again
- Mr. Chess
- Rubbed Out > Absolutely gorgeous intro
- She Runs Away > Another old favorite
- The End Of Outside > I was SOOOO happy to hear this. I told
Duncan earlier that day I was hoping to hear one of 2 songs at the instore.
"Memento" and "The End Of Outside." He just said the
title and I started clapping wildly by myself. At the end Duncan nodded
and smiled in my direction. I think I could've died right there if I
wasn't having such a good time.
For one of the songs Duncan asked if David was still in the house. My
brother
didn't really know it was David that was right in front of him at the bar.
He
just received his drink so he just chugged it down and ran up the
stage.

Duncan's shoes!

Um...yeah...I swear I didn't.
After Duncan's set I went to the merch table in the back
to pick up his promo
EP. Was hoping they wouldn't run out seeing as this is the last pit stop.
My
brother said that Duncan was already out on the floor to start greeting
fans.
Usually my brother would want to go home at this point but we decided to
stay.
David came up to me and asked if I enjoyed the show. Of course...no
complaints
at all. So my brother got his stuff signed and I snapped a photo. I don't
know why I was in line again to see Duncan, but I had him sign the EP and
my brother snapped a horrible photo of me with Duncan. Duncan was so
humble and said he felt bad that he couldn't remember my name. I told him
and of course he remembered the "K." He said he would be back
early next year and I'll definitely be looking forward and hoping that I
could go to it!

Oh yeah...finally figured out what his shirt says
FRONT: "I Blame Paris Hilton"
BACK: "For Everything" LOL.
Still with me? Here's a link to the "She
Runs Away" video clip.

Oh and the cool poster.
