Jude
Downpilot
October 16, 2006 - Tractor Tavern - Seattle, WA

Woke up feeling pretty faint on the day of the show. Still I was determined not to miss this Jude gig, since I've been looking forward to it since...since well his last show here ended.

After weeks of anticipation Jude's new cd Redemption also came in the mail for me today fresh from France so I popped that into the cd player and listened to it all reading the lyrics for the new songs. Emotionally charged, beautiful lyrics and voice, it was all there in this cd and was it worth the wait and the struggle to find my inner Frenchie self to navigate through the website to order them? Yes.

Arriving at the venue there was a small group already waiting outside. You could hear Jude rehearsing behind the door...I remember hearing "End Of My Rainbow." Shortly after we were let in to wait again for Downpilot to perform.

Downpilot is a pretty low key trio from Wallingford, WA. They weren't bad. Wish I could elaborate more, but I barely know anything else about them. After their set the seats (which were all arranged at the side of the venue) came and were moved onto the floor. To my relief so I wouldn't have to worry about fainting while standing. Although if I did, it would be a mystery if it was because of Jude or my experience earlier in the day.

Jude came out and performed solo. I figured as much seeing as Craig (his bass player) didn't have the Seattle show listed on his schedule. I couldn't imagine just Jude and drums going on tour either so I presumed it to be a solo gig.

The show started with a slow number from Redemption called "She's Getting Married." Below is the song list, as complete as I can recollect from my memory. Might also be slightly out of order, but I guess that's not too important I hope.

She's Getting Married
Run To My Room
All I Want To Do
I'm Sorry Now
Break Up Song
I Know
Asshole (piano)
Gay Cowboy
Your Eyes
Rick James
Madonna
Perfect Plank
Baby Ruth
Indian Lover
I Do
End Of My Rainbow (piano)
Paper Towel
Brad & Suzy
Everything's Alright
Cuba
Love Letters
Save Me (piano)
Love, Love, Love

It was a treat to hear the newer songs, as well as the old favorites. Jude didn't have a setlist that night so he took plenty of requests from the audience. Many of which I was glad to hear. "Paper Towel" being one of the earliest ones I've always wanted to hear... "Love Letters" and "End Of My Rainbow." "Madonna" was done unexpectedly and so beautifully. Certainly one of the greatest highlights of the night, plus an excellent version of "Gay Cowboy." Another touching moment was hearing "End Of My Rainbow" on the keyboard that I was sitting in front of. For a moment there it felt as if it were a private show. Yes, I can dream. Jude attempted to do "Perfect Plank" and after a couple of stumbling lyrics he came back. There was also some lyric trouble in "Everything's Alright" in which he decided to improvise and telling us a few secrets in the process. One of them being that today was his birthday so instead of the usual sing along of "Ba Ba Ba Baaah" it turned into "Hap-py Birth-daaay."

"Everything's Alright" - Live at the Tractor Tavern 10162006)

Jude shared with us some stories of his time in France. Including the jet lag from coming there, to Portland, then driving up to Seattle. Then as mentioned on his blog about some guy wanting Jude to play down the read carpet on one of the French tv shows and also the one about looking at some famous actresses' boobs when he was really trying to listen to the translator. An act which he didn't mean and denies. Also about the bread checkers who run around checking stock.

Oh, I got a kick out of the Michelle Branch story since one of her tours also spurned the touring of another one of my favorite musicians who's record label could really care less about. Anyways, he said he started scotch on that tour. LOL. Back in the day with the Kenneth Cole campaign and arguments over sunglasses. Ah, priceless.

The show started a bit late since there was an car accident somewhere. Really, didn't get home until after 1am. Anyways, there was some guy lying in the audience about being there and wanted to hear "Everything's Alright" which was dedicated to him.

The show ended with the "Love, Love, Love." There was no encore, but with the setlist already packed and the lateness of the hour Jude just played right through it all.
I also could've sworn Jude throwing in some of the Ellen theme song into some of the performances, but certainly threw in seamlessly some Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine" into "Love."

There was also no merch available. Jude said that the pressings for Redemption were happening right now for the US and will be available sometime in November, but there was some stuff up on iTunes (which I can't seem to find). Either way, I was already hooked up with and wearing my Jude shirt and had in hand my cd that came in the mail. When he came out I had him sign it and also the copy I bought for my brother. Who created the Jude obsessive monster that I am today. Muahaha. Jude was very nice and I told him how I loved the song "Stay." Which he said was very personal and how other people wanted it to be the opener of the record. My initial reaction after I heard the new cd for the first time was "this guy could use a hug." I didn't initiate it, but I couldn't turn it down when opportunity arose. Also got a photo...this time the flash didn't work again. Hmm...certainly I didn't rig the camera that way just to be standing there next to such a talented and inspiration musician for a few more seconds.

Jude
- always generous and sweet with his fans I ran off a happy camper, well, I went back to get my trusty sharpie, then I was off as a happy camper.

I could listen to his voice, talking or singing, whatever it may be all night long.
Many endless thanks to Jude, one of my all time favorite musicians. :)
