The line was longer than heck to get into the venue. Then this guy said
that if we already had tickets we could wait in the other line behind
the venue in the alley (which wasn't any shorter). How on earth can they
fit that many people in such a small club? Oh well, the line chatter was
entertaining as a group of girls behind me were comparing John Mayer to
Jessica Simpson. Okaaaay. Inside I saw that the area around the stage was crowded already. I was thinking about heading up to the bar area hoping it could offer a better view, but decided to stay grounded. On the tips of my toes I had a pretty good view. I didn't know that there was another opening act for the show, Missy Higgins. A bubbly (but cool) Australian. Pretty talented as well. She played the keys and the gay guitar named Melody. I couldn't tell if it was her or her other band member, but there were some great musical rhythms from the set. I don't really have any familiarity on her songs at all. Certain she played something called "10 Days" though. There was another break. Then Anna Nalick came on. With a "Jem and the Holograms" Tee as well. I remember that show and how I used to watch it with my brother. I haven't had too much time to familiarize myself with the song titles, but she was pretty helpful in supplying them for my little unofficial setlist. "Citadel" "Paper Bag" "Consider This" Anna went on saying that she was as sick as a dog and just wanted a warm blanket, chicken soup, and a mommy. If that was her when she was sick, she's pretty lucky as she walked all over the stage. "Satellite" (My favorite) "Breathe (2AM)" "Wreck Of Day" She introduced her band. Also accused someone of having a setlist for knowing the next song. "In My Head" "In The Rough" She gave a shout out to this guy with a banana head (really) standing a few feet to my right. I don't know what the whole deal is, but supposedly he's been following her around to other shows? "Bleed" Awesome way to go out on a high note. Although I was hoping to maybe hear a cover of the Wallflowers' "6th Avenue Heartache" Howie Day came at around 10:30ish. I was eager to see Howie perform with a full band. His setlist with commentary: "Perfect Time Of Day" Howie asked about the origins of the name of the venue. People stuff in a shoebox? What??? "Ghost" (A lovely old favorite. He wanted to play the depressing songs after the rocking ones) He stopped here to ask what day it was and wished everyone a Happy Tuesday...and who are all you people. LOL. "Sunday Morning Song" "Brace Yourself" "Tell Me Something" (new song!) I really liked this one. There was discussion about how "Freebird" sucks and he said that these were the same people who would say "Collide" sucks. Then he mentioned he would play it later on. The band then broke out into that "Pretty Woman" theme, but they didn't actually do that. Would've been an interesting cover song choice though. "She Says" (I love this song!) "Don't Dream It's Over" (Crowded House Cover) This was amazing! I absolutely loved it and only hope to find a recording of it online or something. Howie was talking to one of his guitar players afterwards and saying that they played it in a lower key...then something about doing the song in a Johnny Cash style. Interesting. I think Howie might have been a bit wasted. "End Of Our Days" "Be There" (new song!) Oh I would love to hear this again soon. "You & A Promise" This song brought Howie to venture around the stage. "Collide" (Just lovely) "Morning After" (Encore, yes it was just one song) Overall I had a pretty good time. Despite my aching feet, head, and neck I enjoyed the rocky side of Anna. I think I liked her set the best out of the three that night. Don't get me wrong...I love Howie, but I think he was having a few problems with his voice...with the exception of "Be There" when he hit all of those high notes. I think his vocals were better last year when I saw him solo. |
