Pete Yorn hits Seattle! My adventure began the night before trying to find a way into the Mountain Music Lounge performance. Thanks to the DJ, John Fisher, I was able to make it in. I must point out that he has some great hospitality and it was cool to meet him after seeing him introduce so many of my favorite bands in concert and hearing him on the radio. When my brother and I got in there was lunch service going on. I was a bit nervous so I couldn't eat the comp lunch and I could hear Pete down the hall and I also saw tambourine extraordinaire Maxx wandering around. When it was time to see the set we were already by the door so I was one of the first to the small performance area. I think they fit about 27 fans in there. I looked at the front row not sure I was able to sit there or if they were reserved for the radio people. As I was debating Pete motioned with his hand to "come up." I thought that was a general thing for everyone to come closer and sit down. When I found my seat in the front Pete continued to motion at me in his quiet way. So I stepped closer...and closer...until I was next to him. I wasn't really thinking he would remember me at all. It's been soooo long after all. He said "hello" and asked how I was doing. Me...I couldn't really remember anything I said or did...I was at a daze at that point until the session began.
The performance was pre-recorded for the radio. Oops I destroyed the magic of the "live" radio feed. You can hear the songs and the interview from the performance at the KMTT website. He did "Closet," "Don't Wanna Cry," "A Girl Like You" (so nice to hear the hidden track love), and "For Nancy" as per request. "A Girl Like You" was so beautiful in the acoustic setting and Johnny Polonsky (the only other band member present) was absolutely dynamite on "For Nancy" with his mandolin. The interview went very well touching on a variety of subjects which Pete answered coolly. Should I mentioned he wore flip flops to the station? I only had one question I wanted to contribute to the interview, but John had it on his list. It was about the making of the "Don't Wanna Cry" video and if he had any reservations about being underwater. I like how he just rolls with the ideas of whatever the directors have in mind.
After the show we got free energy saver light bulbs (like I needed it since I was pretty much beaming from happiness). Pete was signing posters for the "Back & Forth" album, which looks pretty cool if you haven't seen it. I was feeling rather um...state of shock when it was my turn to meet Pete, but he filled in the void signing a poster for me (really not sure if he remembered my name if he remembered my face - he did though) and also my huge "Day I Forgot" vinyl banner which I always wanted autographed, but was too huge and unwieldy for most situations. My brother also got a signed poster too.
It was a nice little intimate
performance. I was surprised that besides "Don't Wanna Cry" all of the
other songs he performed were from "Musicforthemorningafter." Reminds me
of seeing him back in the day...
