Back in the day, rock stars were
known for their vices; just think of Keith Richards, or
old-school Ozzy. Pete Yorn cites a number of party boys as early
influences - he was particularly fond of Mötley Crüe, the
ultimate dirt kings - but when pressed to confess his own
transgressions, he comes off looking saintly. "I'm addicted to
Yahoo Gin," he admits, referring to the Internet card game and
not a brand of booze. "I play all day trying to get my ranking
up." Luckily for Pete, leading a life of grime is no longer
considered a prerequisite to making good rock music. The Day I
Forgot (Columbia), his follow-up to 2001's widely (and wildly)
acclaimed musicforthemorningafter, boasts "higher peaks
and lower valleys," according to the singer-songwriter. But most
important to Pete is that the new cuts will be "fun live."
That's a good thing as he gears up to go on the road, back to
his band of buddies and, oh yes, back to some good old-fashioned
rock-star excess. |
